Destiny Strings Application

In Character Information
Name: Kanaya Maryam
Series: Homestuck
Canon Standing: After finding the Auxiliatrix Key and explaining to Jade the nuances of frog breeding; basically, just prior to Return to the Core.
Age: Kanaya would equate in human years to thirteen.
Birthday & Astrology Sign: In a twist which surprises no one, Kanaya's birthday would fall on the human calendar under September 17, making her a Virgo.
Arcana: High Priestess.

Personality:
Kanaya is… a pretty special snowflake, by troll standards. She is perfectly aware of this. A big part of her oddness comes from her blood color. Alternian trolls come in twelve hemocastes – that is, whatever color their blood is determines their place in society and their abilities. Kanaya has jade blood. This is really only about halfway up the spectrum, so she is considered too high to be a lowblood and too low to be a highblood. Jade blood is special for a different reason; they are one of the rarest blood colors possible, and their tendency to be diurnal in the night-dwelling society of trolls effectively isolated them, causing further myth and legend to arise about them. Kanaya has been taught by her efficient but loving lusus, the one and only Virgin Mother Grub, to act responsibly and be considerate at all times. In doing so, she only reinforces the air of mystery surrounding her caste.

Perhaps the first thing one will notice about Kanaya is that she’s wordy. Very, very wordy. She does not use a small word where a big one will better suit her purposes, and she prioritizes making her words clear. In part because of her lusus, and in part because of her love of Alternian vampire romance novels, she has picked up a large vocabulary and sees no problem with sharing this sesquipedalian loquaciousness with everyone else. Unfortunately, not everyone else is as eloquent as she. For the most part she has learned to restrain herself to the uncommon but understandable words. Her grammar, however, is on a much lower plane; it tends to take uncommon paths and turn on over itself, sometimes confusing even her.

Battles of wit are not one of Kanaya’s strong suits. Of course, her unfortunate grammar choices come into account here, but at the beginning of her development she was almost laughably bad at grasping the concept of sarcasm. After Rose helped her along a little bit, she tended to end her sarcastic moments with a little explanation or remark on her success. For example, while talking to Karkat about the humans, and specifically one named Jade, she used the typical alien trope of referring to her as ‘the Jade human’. And a few seconds later: “I just used the phrase ‘the Jade human’ satirically for no reason. It is one of the ways in which I am becoming more multicultural.”

Kanaya was taught by the Mother Grub to be considerate, sensible, and proper; she has taken to these guidelines admirably. She is described by less formal associates as a ‘fussyfangs’ – that is, she wants to help everyone everywhere with all of their problems, and dislikes watching people fall into disagreements and problems. She has a natural talent and willingness to do it, but sometimes gets a bit too eager and confident in her abilities, leading some people to think of her as meddlesome. Some times, they are right. However, if asked for help, Kanaya will almost always do everything in her power to resolve any situation that the querent throws at her. She will always approach these situations with a clear head and a grim sort of understanding of what she must do to make it right.

Her hive is isolated in the middle of the desert, where the only beings for miles around are herself, the Mother Grub, and the zombies who like to come out and attack her stronghold during the day. This is a problem for Kanaya for two reasons: one, they pose an obvious threat to her safety, and two, they pose an obvious threat to the safety of her garden. As one of the trolls who can withstand the Alternian sun (they’re nocturnal for a reason – any non-jade troll would burn to a crisp if they stood out there for too long), Kanaya has taken up an interest in the rare practice of landscaping, turning the area around her hive into a desert oasis. The Virgin Mother Grub goes out to defend the child and her interests, and sometimes Kanaya herself helps out too, revving up her chainsaw to take down the zombies who bypassed Mother Grub’s defenses.

She then turns the chainsaw back into its compact form, a lipstick container, and fixes her makeup.

Landscaping is not the extent of Kanaya’s interest in the aesthetic. She is a creative force to be reckoned with, and aside from landscaping, she spends her time researching and creating the finer points of Alternian fashion. Being for the most part isolated from the rest of troll society, Kanaya never got the memo that trolls are supposed to avoid bright colors in their style choices. She drapes fabric all over her otherwise pure white hive, and delights in creating hair, makeup, and clothing decisions to make herself and others look their best.

Backstory:
Here, have a bio.

Canon Powers:
Kanaya has no offensive powers. She is, however, a troll; her skin is tougher than most humans', translating roughly to a Defense stat, and she has increased speed and strength as well.

My Name Is Kanaya Maryam And I Would Like To Get A Few Facts Straight If You Dont Mind
As I Understand It
There Are Two Deities In Control Of This Mostly Human Occupied And Concerned Planet Named Philemon And Nyarlathotep
I Apologize To Nyarlathotep In Advance If I Have Made An Error In Spelling His Her Its Name
In Any Case These Two Deities Have Decided To Summon Beings From Other Worlds To Decide Whether Humanity Is Worthy Of Continued Existence
Am I Understanding This Right
Because If So Then I Would Like To Inquire Upon The Definition Of Human Employed By These Two Deities
You See I Am Not A Human At All But Rather A Locally Unfamiliar Species Called A Troll
So It Strikes Me As A Little Bit Inappropriate To Invite Someone Such As Myself To Decide The Collective Human Fate
For This World That Is
As Far As I Am Aware Quote Unquote My Humans Fates Have Already Been Decided

Thank You For Your Time

3rd Person Example
It didn't take a lot of detective work to figure out why the names of these districts were so familiar.

Kanaya had been unsure of the Scorpio District at first. Other connotations still clouded her judgement, and the first few days were spent wondering if she should really set foot in there. But after hearing enough stories about the sights to be seen inside, her curiosity got the best of her, and the grey-skinned girl set out with her animalistic guardian to discover just what lurked within the brickstone confines of the Scorpio District. As it turned out, there was quite a lot.

Now, she had entered this world with almost no money to her name, and she was very aware of this. But no one ever had to pay for window shopping. Almost immediately upon entrance, Kanaya's eyes lit up (no pun intended) at the street in front of her. Art... art everywhere. She proceeded down the street in a trance, stopping several times to gaze at some object or another that sat in the window of a small store. It was a painting from a private studio, or intricate carvings being put on display at the gallery inside, or -- and this was her absolute favorite -- bolts upon bolts of brightly coloured, high-quality fabric. Sphinx had to literally growl for her to pry herself away from the window.

"My goodness," the troll kept saying to herself as she continued, neck quickly beginning to ache from all the turning it was doing. There was just so much to look at. "I... I did not know a place like this existed. Or at least that it was so grand." And this was true. Her interesting choice of dwellings meant that most supplies were ordered off of the Internet, and of course, looking at something on a computer screen could never match up to the real thing.

Sphinx seemed unimpressed, but Kanaya had learned by this point that she was not one to show emotions openly. There were a couple of times, however, where Kanaya would glance behind her to find Sphinx's tail flicked upward, her gaze fixed on something or another. Feline body language was admittedly not one of her strong suits, but her troll-like facial expression implied some interest... and besides, she realized eventually, it made perfect sense that Sphinx would show her appreciation as well. Personas were a manifestation of the user's mind, were they not?
